Hystory of the City
Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim, has a rich history that dates back to the 18th century. It was initially a small village, but during the reign of the Chogyals (the hereditary rulers of Sikkim), it grew into an important trading post between Tibet and British India. In the mid-19th century, Gangtok became a popular destination for British officers who were stationed in Darjeeling. The town continued to flourish and eventually became the administrative capital of Sikkim in 1894. Today, it is a bustling city with a unique blend of Sikkimese and Tibetan cultures. North Sikkim, on the other hand, has a much more rugged and isolated history. Due to its proximity to the Tibet border, it was once a strategic location for the defense of the area. The region was only opened to tourists in 1990, and today it remains a relatively untouched and remote destination. The history of North Sikkim is closely linked to the Lepcha tribe, who are believed to be the original inhabitants of the region. Over time, other tribes migrated to the area, including the Bhutias and the Nepalese. Today, the region is home to a diverse mix of cultures and traditions. One of the most significant events in the history of North Sikkim was the construction of the Nathu La Pass, which was completed in 1903. This pass connects Sikkim with Tibet and was an important trade route between the two regions. However, it was closed in 1962 after a brief border conflict between India and China. Overall, the history of Gangtok and North Sikkim is closely tied to the region's strategic location and cultural diversity. These places offer a unique insight into the history and culture of Sikkim, making them must-visit destinations for any traveler interested in exploring the region's past.Reviews Scores and Score Breakdown
